Sorry I was too late for your dad, but you're right: to the best of my knowledge, they're never a secured community. I do know that lots of folks with dementia and alzheimer's successfully live in care homes for some time, but they then have to find another situation to handle increased needs. Yes. Familiarity is a big deal. Dad kept asking to go home from both the hospital and memory care. Broke my heart. I can't imaging getting them accustomed to one place only to need to move them to something more suitable to their needs...but you do what you have to do.
Thank you for another option for our seniors. I never knew these homes existed; it was a real surprise, frankly. You gave us a clear picture of their possibilities and probing questions to ask.
